Filzengraben 8-10, Klanglabor, Donnerstag 14:00 – 16:00 h
Far from unassertive and acquiescent, listening is always situated and invested. The focus of the seminar is twofold: 1), to examine the manifold commitments of various listening methodologies (feminist listening, queer listening, the intersection of listening and race, historical and contemporary practices of hermeneutic listening, activist listening, experimental listening), and 2) to comparatively apply these methodologies to as wide a variety of music and sound-based practices as possible.
What would it mean to listen to John Cage in terms of race? How can we hear questions of gender in free jazz? Can there be an activist listening to Beyoncé? What could we gain from a Schenkerian listening to Klangkunst?
In constantly shifting between listening “filters,” the seminar invites us to rehearse a virtuosity of reception.
In German and English.
